Although Matt Damon will not be appearing in this summer’s “The Bourne Legacy” starring newcomer to the series, the “Hurt Locker’s” Jeremy Renner, there is a chance that the actors may team up in the future for a potential “Bourne 5.”
Producer Frank Marshall told Empire magazine that a collaboration could happen in the future, especially since Renner will not be playing Jason Bourne in the film but CIA operative Aaron Cross. Both the “Bourne Ultimatum” and “The Bourne Legacy” occur during the same time so the new film is more of a companion rather than a sequel.
“You see there are several different programmes in the movie with different skill sets,” Marshall said about “Bourne Legacy” (out in theaters on Aug. 10). “All possibilities are open. My dream is that in the next one we see Matt and Jeremy team up.”
Fortunately for Marshall, his dream could become a reality depending on how well “Legacy” does in theatres and whether or not Damon is willing to do another film. During an interview with KCRW last year, Damon said that he hoped “Legacy” will do well at the box office.
“I think if [‘Bourne Legacy’] doesn’t work, we can just ignore it and pretend it didn’t happen, and that’d be fine,” he said.”But I expect that it will work and only help us if we did another one, which I’d love to do.”
Although Damon expressed interest in potentially teaming up with Renner, the prospect of another film with Jason Bourne’s name in the title might be a bit more complicated. For one thing, Damon is extremely loyal to the director of the first three Bourne films, Paul Greengrass.
Furthermore, Damon got into a public feud with Tony Gilroy, calling his initial script “unreadable” and a “career-ender.” He later retracted those statements and told GQ that what he said was a mistake.
“If I didn’t respect him and appreciate his talent, then I really wouldn’t have cared,” Damon said. “My feelings were hurt. That’s all. And that’s exactly why I shouldn’t have said anything. This is between me and him.”
“Ultimatum” ended up being a smash hit with audiences and critics alike, which may have had something to do with Damon’s apology. Whether or not he will reprise his role as Jason Bourne in another film, perhaps alongside Jeremy Renner, is still up in the air but it seems that the door is wide open if Damon would like to return.
