After 115 years of living together, two turtles at an Austrian Zoo are calling it quits. The once happy couple, a pair of Giant Turtles, are refusing to share their cage.
Zoo workers tried everything to keep the marriage from falling apart, feeding them “good mood food” to keep the love alive but haven’t had any luck.
Zoo boss Helga Happ said:,”We get the feeling they can’t stand the sight of each other anymore.”
Bibi and Poldi had been together for longer than anyone at the zoo can remember or were even alive for. The have shared the same cage at the Austrian zoo in Klagenfurt for 36 years and before that they lived at Basel zoo in Switzerland.
“They are both 115 years old – they have been together since they were young and grew up together, eventually becoming a pair,” Happ added.”But for no reason that anyone can discover they seem to have fallen out, they just can’t stand each other.”
Zoo staff noticed the relationship was getting rocky when Bibi attacked her partner, biting off a chunk of hsi shell and carrying out further attacks until Poldi was moved to another enclosure. talk about domestic violence.
Although they do not have any teeth, the turtles have powerful jaws and are capable of killing one another if they wanted to. Nothing had changed with the turtles general routine zoo staff said but Bibi was the one who wanted her own space.
“We were told that it’s very rare that after so many years animals who are a pair will fall apart, but that’s where we are. We hope though we can bring round a reconciliation,” Happ said.
Hopefully these two turtles can sort out their issues.
