(PCM) Lana Wachowski, the director behind “The Matrix” and 2012’s highly-anticipated “Cloud Atlas” has become the first Hollywood director to come out as a transgender individual.
Wachowski revealed her transition while promoting her new film, according to the New York Post. Lana, formerly known as Lara, as been making the transition from a man to a woman for years now, although it is still unclear whether the director has undergone gender reassignment surgery.
The director has remained out of the public eye for years, making her first appearance since transitioning in a new clip promoting “Cloud Atlas.” Wachowski sports bright pink dreadlocks in the trailer and introduces the film alongside her brother.
Despite attempts to keep her personal life private, the director has been a source of headline fodder for years. A bitter divorce from wife Thea Bloom in 2002 and stories about Wachowski being a cross-dresser during the 2003 Cannes Film Festival have kept the director in the spotlight, for better or for worse.
Later in 2003the Gothamist reported on a column written by movie journalist Dave Poland, alleging that Wachowski was in the process of undergoing a “sex change”.
“Every indication I have says that Larry Wachowski is now in the process of changing his sex,” Poland wrote. “Dressing in public like a woman, taking female hormones and yes, having a sex change operation.”
Regardless of any controversy in the past, Wachowski seems very open of her transition today. Her new film is one of the most talked about of the year and hopefully the tabloids will focus more on her talent rather than her personal life.
