Well this is a first: A distracted teenage girl walking down the street on her cellphone was so caught up in her conversation that she didn’t notice the caution blocks on the sidewalk warning her of the sinkhole ahead. She walks right into it, plummeting 20 feet straight down into the ground.
A cab driver passing by saw her fall into the hole and dove in after her! His act of bravery did not, however, pay off; the earth continued to crumble, trapping both of them underground.
“I called out to her but she didn’t respond,” cabbie Wang Wei told the Telegraph. “After I shook her a little, she came to. The dirt kept showering down on us and the kid couldn’t stop crying.”
Firefighters arrived shortly after, and were finally able to pull them out to safety. Miraculously, everyone was okay!
Just another reminder of why you shouldn’t be walking and talking or texting. Granted, the warning signs were not much of a warning, but the bottom line is this: People simply cannot pay attention to things going on around them when they have a cellphone in their hands. She probably would have been more observant had she not been distracted. So get off your phone already!
