Former Weezer bassist Mikey Welsh, 40, has died.
The Chicago Tribune reports that Welsh was found “unresponsive” in his room at the Raffaello Hotel, where he failed to check out.
According to the Cook County Medical Examiner’s office, Welsh was pronounced dead at the scene at 2:50pm.
According to Weezer’s website, the band is scheduled to play Chicago’s RiotFest, and Welsh was expected to catch the show.
Scott Shriner, the band’s current bassist, posted a short tribute to the fallen bassist on his Twitter.
“Really bummed about Mikey. My heart goes out to his family and friends. Such a talent… he made a special mark on the world with his art.”
Authorities say a drug overdose is suspected, however, no official cause of death has yet been released.
