Honor Student Gets Jail Time for Missing Too Much School

Yes, you read that right! A high school honor student from Texas was thrown in jail for missing too many classes. Diane Tran, 17, was arrested in open court on Wednesday, after receiving warnings by the judge for missing school the month before. “If you let one run loose, what are you gonna’ do with the rest of ’em?,” said Judge Lanny Moriarty. “Let them go too? A little stay in the jail for one night is not a death sentence.” In fact, she admitted to wanting to make an example of the teen! It may not be a death sentence, but Tran has a lot on her plate, working both full-time and part-time jobs, in addition to taking advanced and college level courses, and that makes a 24-hour jail stint plus a $100 fine a pretty big set-back. Even Tran’s classmates admit that she has a lot more to deal with than the average high school student playing hooky. “She goes from job to job from school. She stays up until 7 a.m. in the morning doing her homework,” said Devin Hill, a classmate and co-worker. If that weren’t enough responsibility, the 17-year-old honor student was also left to raise her younger sister after her parents split up and moved away. Wow.
