Prepare your best Black Beard accents, Captain Hook impressions, and Jack Sparrow swagger because today is International Talk Like a Pirate Day!
Talk Like a Pirate Day all started back in June of 1995 when a group of friends were playing a game of raquetball and started talking to each other in pirate slang. By the time the game was over, “the pirate guys” John Baur and Mark Summers decided that what the world really needed was a day to celebrate talking like a pirate.
The guys picked a random date, September 19, for this holiday to be held and celebrated their new holiday for seven years on their own until they came across Dave Barry, a syndicated columnist, e-mail address. Barry ended up loving the idea, wrote about Talk Like a Pirate Day, and the rest is history.
If you are not versed in pirate lingo, here are some helpful terms:
Ahoy! – “Hello!”
Avast! – “Stop and give attention.”
Aye! – “I agree.”
Smartly. – “Do something quickly.”
Grog- “An alcholic drink.”
So strap on an eye-patch, watch some pirate movies, and happy Talk Like a Pirate Day mates!
