You never know what you’re going to find at Goodwill!
What would you do if you found a diamond ring in a pair of second-hand jeans you just bought? Keep it, (“One man’s trash is another man’s treasure?” ) or try to find its rightful owner?
For Deb Thompson of Hamlake, Minnesota, it was an easy decision, and not the one a lot of people would choose. After purchasing a pair of $3.99 jean capris at her local Goodwill store, Thompson returned home to try the jeans on and discovered she got way more than she paid for. There was a diamond ring in the pocket.
“I took the ring out of my pocket and I sat on the floor with my daughter and her fiancé. I put my arm out in the center, and I opened it in my palm and we all just went, ‘Wow. Oh my God,” Thompson told ABC News.
She thought to herself, “Oh geez, somebody lost their ring. The husband or fiancé must be out there saying, ‘You’re not getting another one!'”
Instead of cashing in the ring, which was appraised at $6,500, Thompson is working with Goodwill to try and find the ring’s original owner. The story is posted on the Goodwill’s Facebook page, in hopes that the owner will come forward and claim the ring. Unfortunately, Thompson says all the calls and emails have been phonies so far, but she is hopeful.
“This is how I see this whole story ending: Somebody comes forward, says they lost the ring, says they’re insured and have the papers to prove it. That’s how I’m hoping this ends. So far, it’s not that way, but we’ll see. Only time will tell,” said Thompson.
She admits, she wouldn’t mind having to keep the diamond ring, but ideally would like to see the owner get their ring back. “I need to find the owner, and I’d love to hear the story of how it got in there,” Thompson told KSTP News.
